After two amazing nights in Omaha, we drove 1 hour south to our next destination Nebraska City. Frequented with passing corn fields, the drive to the city was peaceful and gorgeous. Founded in 1855, Nebraska City is the oldest incorporated city in the state. Famous as the home of Arbor Day, the quaint city has a deep rooted focus on tree-planting. The people’s respect for their planet is matched with their respect for others. Everyone we met gave such warm and welcoming greetings.
We started our day with lunch at The Keeping Room in historic downtown Nebraska City. What first began as an Antique store, The Keeping Room has expanded to also include a Cafe and Clothing Boutique. The perfect place to grab a bite to eat and enjoy some shopping. We went with intentions of a light lunch and simply ordered some delicious salads. But then we were introduced to the pies! Each looking more delicious than the last, I settled on a big slice of Apple Praline Pie with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.
After lunch we took a walk around. Nebraska City is a small town full of Midwest charm. Walking down Central Avenue you will find plenty of shops and restaurants, along with beautiful murals decorating the walls. The murals celebrate city traditions such as Arbor Day, as well as, American staples F.W. Woolworth and Coca Cola.
Our host for our stay in Nebraska City was the Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast. The Inn at Whispering Pines is a cozy Victorian farmhouse, originally built in 1878. Since then much has been advanced and added, but much has also stayed the same. Along with the comforts of modern amenities there is a comfort of a simpler time and style. Our host Jeanna was a delight and always made sure we had everything we needed. Jeanna shared with us the rich history of Whispering Pines, and then in the morning shared with us some of the best French toast I’ve ever had!A little ways down the hill from the Inn stands the Roost in the Barn. This renovated horse barn is the ideal option for guests looking for a little space, while still experiencing all of the amenities of the bed and breakfast. Like the inn, the Roost in the Barn is naturally and carefully designed with a rustic decor, met with modern conveniences. With direct access to the yard and plenty of space, this room is also pet friendly for any furry family you might have with you.
For our dinner at Nebraska City we stopped by Timbers at Arbor Day Farm. We were hosted by Chef Iliana Cordero, who introduced us to the menu, including the newly launched Cuban sandwich.

On our way out of Nebraska City we stopped by the Nebraska Welcome sign. With one stop left in our trip, we said goodbye to Nebraska City, and on our way to the next stop, Lincoln. If you want to discover Nebraska City for yourself check out https://visitnebraska.com/ to find out more.
Happy Traveling!
